KING – ONE PAGE SYNOPSIS

Team,

Attached please find a ONE PAGE synopsis on scripted drama KING.  Please do your best to take a quick glance before tomorrow’s new content meeting.  We only have 30 minutes for the meeting and have a lot to go through so let’s be focused and whip through it.

We would need to pre-sell the property so objective in tomorrow’s mtg is to discuss which buyers you think would have an appetite for the series as a presale and decide whether or not to move forward and share with them.  MV – this includes US, thx.

As always, everything you need (including the attached and this email) is posted on the NCS.

KING is a new 8×60 female cop procedural that has just been ordered by Canwest in Canada.  It’s created by Greg Spottiswood and Bernard Zuckerman and exec produced by Bernie Zukerman who is regarded as just about the best non-writing EP in Canada.  It will shoot this fall.  The plan initially was to just shoot a pilot, but Canwest was so pleased with the pilot script that they asked Bernie to produce 8 episodes.

Note that Clark Johnson is attached to direct the Pilot and the Third Episode.  Clark was in the original cast of “Homicide: Life on the Street” (among many other roles) and he directed the Pilot for HBO’s “The Wire” and the Pilot for “The Shield” (among other series.)  He also directed two Sony Features: “S.W.A.T.” (starring Colin Farrell and Samuel Jackson) and “The Sentinel” (starring Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland.)

HICCUPS; slated to air on CTV on March 1, 2010.

13 x 30

Synopsis:
The series stars Corner Gas’ Nancy Robertson, who plays the role of Millie Upton, a children’s author with anger management issues, which are referred to as “hiccups,” giant outbursts, which could be described as a giant fit of depression. These outbursts are immediate, so they are prone to happen at any time. After being told that she  needs some help controlling her anger issues, Millie finds a man named Stan Dirko (Brent Butt), whom she hires as her life coach.

Background/status: BNS wants to look into US format rights and intl distribution.   JP spoke with Michael Sheppard.  He’s really intent on selling the Canadian tape as he feels it will run for years and he’ll have money coming in to supplement production. He’s of course open to doing a deal for remake rights, but he will want to sell the finished Canadian tape along with it.  He wants to figure out a way for SI to be a distributor.
Next steps:  Salesteam to review an episode, provide comments and JP to pursue with Sheppard.

Macy’s is launching a television special inspired by the New York Sun’s “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus” editorial from 1897, in aid of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Yes Virginia, set to air on December 11 on CBS, is based around the true story of Virginia O’Hanlon who, in 1897, sent an open letter to the New York Sun asking if there really was a Santa Claus, and the now-famous editorial response written by Francis Church.

“It’s all about the notion of believing in something, and it can be whatever you want it to be,” says Martine Reardon, Macy’s evp of marketing. “It’s people’s own preference, whether that be optimism, generosity, world peace or that we solve world hunger. We want people to feel that they can believe. What this editorial represented to us was the epitome of that.”

The idea for creating an animation special for Macy’s based on O’Hanlon’s story was kicking around for about two years, says Reardon, since the development of the “Believe” platform, but budget and time constraints put the project on hold.

In addition to the show, the “Believe” initiative includes a 25-city Santa Tour and a “Believe” Web site that promotes an essay and video contest inviting visitors to tell the company why they believe they should win a trip to attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. The Make-A-Wish Foundation co-sponsors the site.

Although set in 1897, the show, which follows O’Hanlon’s quest around New York City to prove that Santa is real, is a fictionalized version of the Yes, Virginia story. It features the voiceovers of actors Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alfred Molina and Beatrice Miller as the lead character. The show was written by copywriter Chris Plehal, directed by The Ebling Group’s Peter Circuitt, and animated by Starz Animation in “They really are an entertainment brand, not just in the marketing approach, [but] with . . . the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the fireworks,” says Marco. “This seemed like the perfect fit for them to bring something from the holidays to life.”
